Welcome to Tasmania! The island is in Australia, so this song is sung in English — and since the author, masa, lives on Ishigaki in Okinawa, the chorus carries the local Yaeyama word for thank you: mii-fai-yu. It's a warm acoustic folk song, like someone sitting next to you, playing guitar and telling you a story.
The story follows a girl who runs a café by the bay. Since her mum fell ill, she has forgotten how to smile. A traveller leaves her a notebook and asks her to write down ten things she's thankful for every night before bed. On the first night she finds only three; by the twenty-first, the pen runs on its own; on the hundredth, at the Bay of Fires, her mum takes her hand and laughs out loud.
The arrangement is deliberately dry and close: the first half is just one guitar and a voice, like a soft voice at your bedside. Only when the story turns do the Okinawan sanshin, upright bass and a second guitar join one by one; the interlude brings harmonica and warm brass, with a faint didgeridoo humming underneath. It ends with one guitar again, saying goodnight under the Southern Cross — a song for bedtime, right after you close your gratitude notebook.
