Welcome to Hawaiʻi! It’s part of the United States, so this song is sung in English. It’s an unplugged acoustic indie-pop song — like a girl sitting next to you, strumming a guitar and telling you a secret.
On a rainy Monday she takes a vitamin and tells herself “this one’s gonna work” — and somehow, it does. Was it the pill, or her head? Who cares — she’s out of bed. Lucky socks on game day, red shoes for a date, wine that tastes better because it costs more: this is the power of expectation the book is all about. Everybody fools themselves a little, so you might as well be happy about it.
The arrangement stays close and clean: one voice from start to finish, hand claps and guitar for the rhythm, a plucked cello for the bass. A ukulele takes the break; then everything drops away and she sings alone: “Tell me it’s magic, I’ll believe you; tell me I’m brave, and I’ll be brave too.” A key change lifts the last chorus, and a viola carries the song quietly home.
