    Book notes

    A Rookie Agent's Beginning

Douglas joined the FBI in 1970, and his first assignment was Detroit. At the time Detroit had an extremely high crime rate and serious racial tensions. He worked in a unit handling ordinary criminal cases, investigating bank robberies and extortion.

In the course of interrogating criminals, he developed a keen interest in "why people commit crimes" and gradually noticed behavior patterns that recurred across different cases. He was later transferred to the Milwaukee field office, where while working cases he also served as a SWAT sniper and a recruit trainer. He discovered the "signature" that could link multiple cases together, and as a result was recommended for hostage negotiation training, which changed the direction of his career.
