¿Quién es el autor?
- 馬可・奧理略 (Marcus Aurelius, 121–180)，羅馬帝國皇帝，在位期間 161 至 180 年，是「五賢帝」中的最後一位。他年輕時被安東尼努斯・庇護收為養子，從小接受斯多葛哲學的訓練
- 他在位期間幾乎沒有一刻安寧：邊境戰爭不斷、瘟疫肆虐帝國、宮廷陰謀與財政困難接連而來。本書大約寫於 170 至 180 年間，正是他親自率軍在多瑙河前線與日耳曼部族作戰的時候
- 這本書原本只是他寫給自己的私人筆記，用希臘文寫成，沒有打算出版，也沒有正式書名；常見的書名是《沉思錄》，有人認為原標題是「致自己」。全書十二卷，第一卷寫於夸迪人的土地，第二卷寫於卡農圖姆
- 現存最早的記載約在西元 860 年，第一個印刷版本於 1558 至 1559 年在蘇黎世出版。它被許多政治人物與讀者視為枕邊書，中文譯本以梁實秋、何懷宏等人的譯本最常見
