    Book notes

A Novel Published Under a Pseudonym

According to Wikipedia, when The Price of Salt was published in 1952, the author was credited as "Claire Morgan." The real author was Patricia Highsmith, the suspense novelist famous for Strangers on a Train. She used a pseudonym because she did not want to be labeled a "lesbian novelist." Her original publisher rejected the manuscript, and her agent warned her that writing such a novel after Strangers on a Train would be professional suicide.
