- 查爾斯・狄更斯 (Charles Dickens, 1812–1870)，英國維多利亞時代最受歡迎的小說家，童年家貧，父親因負債入獄，他十二歲就到鞋油工廠做童工，作品常關注社會底層與不公
- 本書 1859 年在他自己創辦的週刊《一年四季》上連載，同年出版單行本；寫作時受到歷史學家卡萊爾《法國大革命》的深刻影響，也受到他參與演出的劇作《冰凍深淵》中犧牲自我的情節啟發
- 全書分為三部：〈死而復生〉、〈金線〉、〈暴風雨的蹤跡〉，故事在倫敦與巴黎兩座城市之間展開
- 1859 年出版，依本站分類屬於 1950 年以前的經典小說
