Who is the author?
- 紫式部，平安時代中期的女作家與宮廷女官，生卒年不詳，約活躍於十一世紀初；她曾侍奉一條天皇的中宮彰子，熟讀中國漢詩文
- 本書約成書於 1008 年前後，共五十四帖（章），以平假名寫成，人物約四百人，被許多人視為世界上最早的長篇小說之一
- 在日本，它的地位如同莎士比亞之於英國；十二世紀的《源氏物語繪卷》是日本現存最早的繪卷作品之一。英譯本有亞瑟・韋利、賽登施蒂克、泰勒等版本，中文有豐子愷、林文月等譯本
