- 本書 1919 年出版，靈感來自法國後印象派畫家高更的生平；毛姆 1904 年在巴黎結識認識高更的人，1914 年更親自前往大溪地蒐集資料
- 書名來自一篇書評：形容某人「忙著渴望月亮，卻從沒看見腳邊的六便士」
