- 維克多・雨果 (Victor Hugo, 1802–1885)，法國浪漫主義文學的代表人物，詩人、小說家與劇作家，著有《鐘樓怪人》等作品
- 他反對拿破崙三世稱帝，流亡海外將近二十年，大部分時間住在英吉利海峽的根西島；本書構思超過二十年，在流亡期間完成
- 本書 1862 年出版，分為五部，以 1815 到 1832 年的法國為背景，最後的高潮是 1832 年巴黎的六月起義；據說出版後雨果寫信問出版商「？」，對方回信「！」，形容銷售盛況
- 1862 年出版，依本站分類屬於 1950 年以前的經典小說；1985 年改編的音樂劇是史上最長壽的音樂劇之一
